    Sedation Dentistry/IV-Complicated Extractions

If you would rather have dental or oral problems than book a visit to see the dentist, or if you’re avoiding the dentist’s office for any reason, sedation dentistry may be appropriate for you.

It’s perfectly normal to have some nervousness about coming to the dentist, but having intense anxiety or fear which is keeping you away from the chair is a problem that may be rectified with sedation dentistry.

However, sedation dentistry is not used just for those with fears and anxieties, sedation dentistry may also be appropriate for those who:

    • Have a lower pain tolerance than most
    • Have extremely sensitive or damaged teeth
    • Need an unusually large amount of dental work completed
    • Have problems sitting still for extended periods of time

There are multiple ways to be sedated for dental work. Oral medication may be prescribed to help patients relax during dental procedures, the use of nitrous oxide (also referred to as “laughing gas”) is also helpful as it lasts only for a few minutes after it is being administered, meaning you can go about your day after your visit. There is also the sedation method of intravenous sedation (IV). This is used for complicated extractions and other complex work. You are administered the drug through a vein, where it works very quickly.

    Implants

There are a number of reasons why you may have one or more missing teeth. Sports accidents, genetics, and tooth decay are all possibilities. Having an incomplete smile can severely affect a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Having missing teeth may also cause a person to appear older than they really are, but we can help rectify this. The best solution for most patients when they are missing teeth is dental implants. If you are a healthy person with healthy gums and bone dense jawbone, implants may be the right solution for you.

Dental implants are made of titanium metal which acts like the root of the tooth. It is placed into the jawbone where “osseointegration” will occur (the metal fuses to the jawbone, allowing it to act like the tooth’s natural root). An artificial tooth is placed on top of the implant which looks very realistic, like your natural teeth. Implants are very comfortable, most patients will not feel their implants after a short period of time.

    Implant-Supported Dentures/Immediate Loading Implant-Supported Dentures

If you would rather have dental or oral problems than book a visit to see the dentist, or if you’re avoiding the dentist’s office for any reason, sedation dentistry may be appropriate for you.

Endo: Better Known as Root Canal Therapy

Endodontic therapy is commonly known as root canal therapy. Root canals have a tendency to get an undeserving bad rap. You may have heard it is the most painful dental procedure or it can lead to health problems. This misinformation is dangerous and prevents patients from having this safe and sometimes necessary treatment.

Endo therapy is for patients whose tooth pulp (tissue) has become inflamed, infected or injured. It can also be required to preserve or restore a tooth instead of removing it if the nerve of the tooth is infected. The procedure includes removing the infection from inside the crown, roots, and nerves of a tooth. Once removed, the canal is completely disinfected, filled with a natural rubber-like material, and sealed to prevent another infection. The importance of saving a natural tooth is great, it avoids other teeth shifting in the jaw causing jaw problems and having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

    Basic Restorative Services

Restorative services focus on bringing the functionality back to your teeth and giving you great oral health. Restorative dentistry may include but is not limited to:

    • Dental fillings
    • Dental crowns and bridges
    • Restoring missing teeth
    • Partial dentures
    • Oral exams/cancer screenings
    • X-Rays
    • Cleaning and polishing

    Crowns

When teeth are damaged but not completely lost, a crown (sometimes called a “cap”) can be used to repair its shape and function. A crown is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or discoloured tooth. The crown also protects it from any further damage. A crown is very comfortable to wear and resembles a natural tooth.

Crowns are strong, can be made of many different materials, and usually last for approximately 10 years or longer if especially if you maintain them well with flossing and brushing.

    Traditional and Invisible Orthodontics

Orthodontics are typically used to realign teeth and perfect the bite and improve both appearance and teeth function.

Orthodontics (braces) can be associated with youth, and while orthodontics can be necessary in childhood and adolescence to create space in the mouth, more adults are gravitating towards orthodontics to help realign their teeth. Orthodontics can be performed at any age. Having your teeth straightened does not only improve the appearance of your smile (which is a great benefit, too!) Realignment also improves the function of the teeth and jaw. It can reduce the number of cavities and chronic inflammation of gums due to fixing the overlapping of teeth.

Some patients prefer using invisible orthodontic tools which can be clear and very discreet as they do not use metal brackets or wires which traditional braces use.

“My family comes here. My son and daughter started here at age 4 and 5 and love coming. My son had an abscessed tooth extraction and didn’t even know that it had been done until the dentist showed him the tooth. Two thumbs WAY up”
    Terry B.
    5-Star Review
“My 4-year-old recently had 3 teeth filled, one of which required freezing. Dr. Kim and the hygienist were very good with keeping him calm and being efficient through the process. Dr. Kim uses a special technique for injecting the freezing and my son didn’t even feel the needle! I highly recommend Tavistock Dental, for adults and for children.”

    5-Star Review
“There’s a reason we drive from Kitchener to Tavistock for our dental; our whole family has had good experiences there. My wife grew up in Tavi and has been going there since she was young. My experience has been very positive over the past 7 years. And today’s work on a cavity was good as usual.”
